An image of insulation in a home.

Over the past few years as the focus on going "green" has broadened,

so has the focus on making residential homes more efficient, one way to do this is with insulation and air sealing.

If your home struggles to stay warm in the winter or cool in the summer, this is where the problem often begins. Let’s seal the deal and break down how insulation and air sealing work together to make your home more comfortable, quieter, and far more energy efficient.

What Insulation Does for Your Home

Insulation is installed within the framed walls and ceilings of a home. It reduces the heat loss and heat gain from the outside temperatures.

There are two common insulation options used in residential construction:

  1. Fiberglass

  2. Spray foam

Spray foam is the more expensive option but it is more efficient, the price does continue to decrease because it's more readily available

In addition to temperature control, insulation can also be upgraded to improve soundproofing between rooms, floors, or shared walls.

What Is Air-Sealing and Why It Matters

Air-sealing is sprayed to prevent air leakage from holes and gaps in the walls, the attic, framing plates, rim joists, doors, windows, and electrical outlets.

Depending on the scope of your construction project, new building codes have been passed with standards for insulation and air sealing to ensure these higher levels of efficiency are achieved, not only helping the environment but also saving the homeowner a lot of money in utility bills.

Understanding Air Sealing

Understanding R Values

The required amount of insulation is defined by its R-Value, the higher the R-Value, the greater the insulating power of the material

The thickness of the framed cavity also dictates the R-Value.
