Step 1: Designing Your Layout
Moving the toilet is the most expensive part of a bathroom renovation, it’s difficult and requires major plumbing changes, so it’s best to keep it where it is.
The easiest thing to do is to swap your existing bathtub for a shower base or a custom shower base, which makes a big impact without the high cost. You can also change the size of your vanity, if space allows, for a simple and affordable way to refresh both the style and functionality of your bathroom.
Step 2: Selecting Your Vanity
Many vanities come with the countertop included, which is why you should always purchase your vanity before selecting a faucet. The countertop will already have pre-drilled holes, and the faucet you buy needs to match that layout.
If the holes are wide apart, it’s an 8-inch spread. If they’re closer together, it’s a 4-inch spread. If there’s only one hole, you’ll need a single-hole faucet. Getting this step right ensures your vanity and faucet fit together seamlessly.
Step 3: Decide on your Plumbing Fixtures
The most popular finishes right now are gold, black, and chrome. To keep your bathroom looking cohesive, make sure your showerhead, handle, and drain all match. This small detail goes a long way in creating a clean, intentional design.
Step 4: Pick the Mirrors, Accessories, and Shower Door
Bathroom accessories are easiest to match with your plumbing fixtures for a cohesive look, but they can also be decorative pieces that stand out and add personality.
When it comes to the shower, think about the style and function that works best for your space options including sliding doors, hinged doors, or even a modern half-wall with a glass panel.
The right mix of mirrors, accessories, and shower design will tie everything together and balance both style and function in your bathroom.
Step 5: Lighting & Electric
Keep it simple! A good rule of thumb is to match the finish of your light fixtures with your plumbing fixtures for a cohesive look. For a double vanity, you can either place two light fixtures, one over each sink or a single fixture centered above both.
I also love adding a high hat over the tub or shower. It not only brightens the space but also adds a touch of luxury to your bathroom experience.
Step 6: Select the Tile
This step has the most components to consider. It’s best to choose a matte finish for the shower floor so it isn’t slippery, while a gloss finish works beautifully on the shower walls.
When it comes to patterns, you can go with straight, brick, or herringbone. A good rule of thumb is to order about 10% extra tile for waste with standard patterns, and 15–20% extra if you’re doing a herringbone pattern.
Don’t forget the grout! it runs between every tile line, and choosing a color that blends in will keep the design looking seamless.
Finally, pay attention to the details like saddles, thresholds and soap niches. These finishing touches tie everything together and give your bathroom a polished, professional look.
Step 7: Coordinate the Paint/Wall Finishes
Lastly, it’s time to pick your paint! This is where you can be as bold or as subtle as you’d like.
I love adding cool and unexpected elements to my designs.
In one of my bathrooms, I chose crisp white for the walls and a dramatic black for the ceiling to create contrast and character. Don’t be afraid to experiment, your wall and ceiling finishes can completely transform the mood of your space and make it truly your own.
