Sheetrock and spackle create the foundation of every finished home. Before you add paint, tile, or decor, these materials form the smooth solid canvas.

Sheetrock, also known as drywall, is the standard wall covering used in residential construction. It provides structure and a clean surface ready for finishing. Although drywall is rarely noticed after construction is complete, selecting the correct type and thickness directly impacts a home’s durability, safety, and long term appearance.

Standard Sheetrock Sizes

There are two common drywall thicknesses used in homes: 1/2 inch and 5/8 inch. Each serves a specific purpose.

1/2 Inch Drywall

This is the most commonly used drywall in residential interiors. Over time, as a home naturally settles, small imperfections such as screw pops or spackle cracks can appear. While this is normal, it may require periodic touch ups.

1/2 inch drywall is best suited for interior living areas and is not recommended for garages or utility rooms due to code and fire safety requirements.

5/8 Inch Drywall

This thicker option is considered an upgrade and offers added strength and durability. Its increased thickness helps prevent screw pops and cracking that can occur as a home settles. It also provides fire resistance, which is why building code requires 5/8 inch drywall in garages and utility rooms.

You will get a beautiful smooth finish with either size drywall.  If your budget allows, upgrading all of your drywall to 5/8" or just the ceilings, will decrease the spackle touch ups from screw pops & cracking seams which appear from settling.

The difference lies in durability, performance, and long term maintenance.

Other Types of Sheetrock

Certain areas of the home require materials designed to handle moisture and heavy use.

Mold and Moisture Resistant Drywall

This type of drywall is coated with a special material that helps prevent moisture absorption. It is commonly used in bathrooms, basements, and other areas where humidity is present. This added protection helps reduce the risk of mold growth and material breakdown.

Cement Board

Cement board is a strong, water durable backer board used primarily behind tile. It will not rot, warp, delaminate, or disintegrate when exposed to moisture. It is suitable for both interior and exterior applications and is the preferred material for shower and tub walls.

The Role of Spackle

Spackle is a finishing compound used to fill screw holes and seams between drywall panels. Once applied, sanded, and finished, it creates a smooth, seamless surface ready for paint or texture. Proper spackling is essential for achieving clean lines and a polished final look.

Trust the Process

A professional contractor knows that not all drywall is the same and understands which materials belong in each area of the home. From standard living spaces to moisture prone rooms and high use areas, proper drywall selection and installation are essential for long lasting results.
